We’ve all been there, right? Your kids just did something that set you off and you got angry. Up to that point, your tone was happy. Then the kids just rubbed you the wrong way. Does that sound familiar?
There seems to be a general tone within the household and that tone seems to be set by mom (at least in our house).
When I’m in a bad mood, everyone is in a bad mood. The opposite is true as well. It doesn’t matter what mood I’m in, the household tends to follow.
I don’t think we necessarily realize this when until we take a second and really look at what is going on. My husband has mentioned things to me in the past about my mood and how everyone else was fine until I came into the room.
That is powerful and I’m not sure many of us realize how much of an impact we have on our home life.
Being a mom is so much more than just hand-holding, wiping noses and disciplining our children on occasion.
So how do you reset your tone when things get out of whack in your house?
Take a Time Out
You’ve heard this time and time again but you wouldn’t keep hearing it if it didn’t work. Take a time out. Go in a different room, preferably one with a door and close it. Breathe, meditate and remind yourself that you set the tone and your family will follow.
Make Time For Self-Care
Let’s face it. Mama needs more than a 5-minute break sometimes. When my kids are really wearing on me and I’ve had angry day after angry day then I know it’s time to pull the trigger on a mama’s day out. It doesn’t even have to be out but it definitely needs to be away from the kids.
Sometimes when I’ve had too much connection to the digital world I lose focus on what really matters. When I find I’m having that problem I turn everything off. I put my phone and laptop away and simply disconnect. It’s hard to do but sometimes it just what you need.
Reconnect with your kids. More often than not they are acting out because they need something from you. They want your attention and love. They need you just as much as you need them at this very moment. So take the time to reconnect with them.
When I’m having an especially hard day I like to pick up my affirmation cards as a way to remind myself of the most important things in my life. These are especially helpful in those hard times when you don’t have a lot of time to disconnect or take a time out. I also like to hide these around my house so when I do run across one it’s a nice little reminder of the things I need in my life.
This is something that many of us don’t focus on much but it could mean the difference between stressed out mom and fun happy mom.
We all want to be that perfect role model for our kids and while there isn’t a perfect standard there is a way to control your mood and tone a little bit better.
Learning to do these things will set the example for your children of how to react in stressful situations as well.
So what do you do to change the tone when you seem to have veered off track?
